Modeling Better Medicine with Technology – an Interview with Dr. V.A. Shiva Ayyadurai – Episode 29

On this episode, Mark and Dr. Gladden invite Dr. V.A. Shiva Ayyadurai to tell his story, from his childhood in India watching his grandmother practice traditional medicine on the weekends to working in the U.S. in medical research and running for U.S. Senate in Massachusetts.

Shiva has grown many businesses that focus on technology, with a frequent interest in healthcare. He discusses his various inventions and breakthroughs that stem from his education in the U.S. and the practice of medicine he observed as a child.

They discuss how different body types have different needs, including diet and medicine. Your body is a system, and different deficiencies bring your system out of balance. Finding those deficiencies to bring your body back into balance is crucial to health. The current health system is based on wartime crisis management for health, treating one problem quickly, rather than prevention and preemptive medicine for the sake of the whole system.

Shiva discusses how the technology he created, CytoSolve®, as an alternative to the very cumbersome and expensive traditional model of drug development. CytoSolve allows for complex models of molecular pathways to be able to test medicines and other compounds mathematically first.

About the guest:

Dr. V.A. Shiva Ayyadurai, the inventor of email and polymath, holds four degrees from MIT, including his PhD in Biological Engineering. He is a world-renowned systems scientist, Fulbright Scholar, Lemelson-MIT Awards Finalist, First Outstanding Scientist and Technologist of Indian Origin (STIO), Westinghouse Science Talent Honors Award recipient, and was nominated for the U.S. National Medal of Technology and Innovation.

On August 30, 1982, the US government recognized Dr. Ayyadurai as the inventor of email by awarding him the first Copyright for “Email” at a time when Copyright was the only way to protect software inventions. His interest in human health began early, when as a child, he observed his grandmother, a village farmer and healer, practice India’s oldest system of traditional medicine.  This motivated his future study and research in systems biology at MIT, leading to his discovery of Systems Health®, a major breakthrough that provides an integrative framework linking eastern and western medicine.

His latest invention CytoSolve®, emerging from his doctoral research at MIT, provides a revolutionary platform for modeling diseases from Cancer to Alzheimer’s to discover drugs at a fraction of the time and cost. He is running for US Senate as an independent in the state of Massachusetts on the policies of clean government, real health, real jobs.
